Even the polished female trial attorneys of the Simon Law Firm in St. Louis, Missouri, who host the Heels in the Courtroom podcast, have had their share of courtroom attire mishaps.
As told in Episode 116, the ladies discuss the missteps that led them to their personal style. No, there’s no “lawyer uniform,” they say, but there is a uniform, of sorts, for each woman.
For Amy Gunn, the most seasoned attorney in the group of , she remembers the time early in her career when she wore a dark, drab skirt suit to trial, and another attorney asked if she had something brighter. Since then, she sports bright colors and urges other women to ditch the traditional dark suit and white shell.
As told in Episode 116, Erica Slater went a bit overboard for her first trial, wearing big, chunky jewelry and an elaborate hair-do. After she lost that trial, a female partner at the firm told her she should probably “tone it down a bit.” For her next trial, she went with the most bland outfit possible, and she recalls that she just didn’t feel like herself. Now, she stays somewhere in the middle with her outfits.
The ladies go on to discuss their personal experiences and lessons learned, including whether to wear pantyhose, what type of jewelry is appropriate, and what type of shoes are best. The consistent message throughout their stories is that the key to being confident in the courtroom is to dress in a way that makes you feel comfortable and powerful.
That looks different for each woman, but finding your personal uniform is critical.
