First-Year Friday: Fit

How your clothes fit in law school has a direct impact on your confidence.

During law school, I gained some weight, as many law students do. The constant pressure to study leaves you sitting for unimaginably long periods and craving comfort food to stave off the mounting stress. For me, it didn’t help that I was within walking distance of a chocolate shop and at least five restaurants with the best comfort food I’ve ever had. And after a few after-class drinks, my resolve to resist grabbing a late-night order of beef Shawarmah and made-from-scratch Baklava was gone.

Nothing stripped my confidence more quickly than wearing clothing that didn’t fit. Clothes that were too tight — which made up the majority of my closet — left me uncomfortable sitting down and uneasy standing up. Clothes that were too loose left me feeling sloppy.

As I realized that my clothes weren’t serving me, I found myself gravitating toward dresses. Shift and sheath dresses made of stretchy fabrics gave me the most confidence. They fit snugly enough to make me feel polished, and they had enough give to keep me comfortable while sitting.

Your clothes should add to your confidence. Keep in mind that your body might change while you’re going through some of the most difficult years of your life, but give yourself some grace, and focus on finding clothes that fit your current body well and make you feel powerful.
