First-Year Friday: Legal Conferences

As you start to develop interests in specific areas of law, there’s no better place to start than legal conferences.

Typical legal conferences are a showcase of practicing attorneys giving presentations on the substantive law and issues in that practice area.

I met my current boss by working up some courage (aided by a little wine) at a water law conference.

As a law student, you have two luxuries: free or discounted access to legal conferences, and spare time to attend (relative to the time you’ll have as a practicing attorney, anyway).

Once you’ve signed up for a legal conference, plan your outfits strategically. As a law student, it’s particularly important to set yourself apart and present yourself as professional.

The simplest combination is a blazer and a dress. You’ll want to go with a bold but professional combination. Color will help you stand out, so avoid navy, black and grey.
