First-Year Friday: The Three-Word Method

Law school is the perfect time to hone your style.

During your first year, you’re taking in all the basic elements of the law: types of claims, the research that will help you decide what type of claim to file, and the writing and presentation skills you’ll need for the litigation process.

You’re developing your own style in your research, writing, and presentation skills. Perhaps your style is sleek, simple,  and hard-hitting. Perhaps your style is a softer style of storytelling, gently leading your reader to your side of the argument.

Your personal style, how you portray yourself outwardly, should be part of your development. A simple method for doing so is the three-word method. Find three words that best represent how you want others to describe you. Perhaps they match your writing and presentation style — sleek and simple but with an edge; or soft,  subtle, and sophisticated.

As with all things in law school, the best approach is to try new things, practice, and pay close attention to when you feel most confident. With some introspection, you can find your most powerful style in law school.
