The most important aspect of how your clothes fit you is how they make you feel.
Too tight, and you’re uncomfortable. You’re also left adjusting yourself frequently, and you can’t feel confident if you’re constantly tugging at a snug skirt to keep the hem down or at a waistband that is too tight.
The opposite end of the spectrum won’t help you feel powerful, either. If you’re drowning in your jacket or your dress is baggy, you’ll inevitably feel frumpy. And just as with clothes that are too tight, you’ll be adjusting yourself and losing focus on your task at hand. Without a structured shape, whatever one makes you feel most confident, you’ll be lost in your clothes, and your outfit will wear you.
In the courtroom, fit is particularly important. You need to be free from restraints. You’ll be standing up, sitting down, and using your arms to gesture. You can’t have an outfit that restricts your ability to present yourself in a powerful way, and you also can’t have an floppy outfit that you have to keep pulling back into place.
For me, the best way to find the perfect fit is to have pieces tailored. My bottom half is disproportionately larger than my top half, and I have curvy hips, so finding dresses and skirts that fit my upper and lower half is difficult. I have found that buying a larger size and altering it to fit my body is the best option.
If it’s a simple fix, I typically take it on myself. However, complex pieces like blazers are better left to the professionals.
Either way, but altering clothing , you can make clothes off the rack fit you and your style. And you can create the best fit for you to ensure that you feel powerful.
