First-Year Friday: The Power of Lipstick

Your time and resources are extremely limited in law school. Perhaps the simplest way to conjure your own confidence without spending a great deal of time and money is to find a lipstick that makes you feel powerful.

If you go to your nearest make-up store and ask for help finding your best lipstick, you’ll likely be pointed in the direction of the most expensive or popular lipsticks, rather than toward a lipstick that works best for you. However, armed with a little knowledge, you can narrow your options and try out a few samples.

First, know your skin tone. This particular bit of information isn’t the final word, but this is where you need to start. Also know that, if you have a cooler skin tone, it’ll be harder to find shades that accentuate your skin. Charlotte Tilbury makes some beautiful and wearable shades, but it’s difficult to find a truly cool tone among that collection.

Second, know what type of lipstick is most practical for you. Do you care more about moisture and comfort of wearability, or are you more concerned about with longevity and applying as infrequently as possible? Mac makes a very creamy formulas with great pigment, but those lipsticks will need to be reapplied. Sephora’s house brand of long-wear lipsticks is a great option for long-lasting color, and a reapplying a simple clear gloss will help keep your lips moisturized.

Third, don’t forget about liner. Using lip liner in the same or similar shade will help keep your look clean and will allow you to shape your lips to compliment your face shape. This extra step won’t take long and is worth it.

With that information in hand, your best option is to go to a make-up specific store and find some samples. Pick colors that compliment your skin tone and that make you feel powerful. For me, a true bluish red will instantly make me feel like I can conquer anything. Pick three shades, and try them in different lights. If you like a color but think it’s too subtle or not subtle enough, stick with the same brand and look for a darker or lighter shade.

Once you find your color and formula, get used to wearing it, even in everyday classes. And get ready to feel powerful.
