As you get to know your client (or client representative) more, you’ll get more comfortable determining how to dress for meetings just with them.
Larger scale meetings, where you’ll be meeting with your client’s Board of Directors or City Council, take a bit more thought and planning when it comes to your ensemble.
If it were just you and your client representative, for instance, perhaps you would lean toward business casual. Those meetings are often less formal, and you don’t want to intimidate your client representative by over-dressing.
But for a more official meeting, it’s better to wear a more formal suit. Others at the meeting will perceive you as more professional and having authority. And, most importantly, you’ll feel more powerful in a sleek outfit.
As for color, board meetings and council meetings are not the place to make a statement. In fact, I would say you’re safer wearing a colorful suit to court than you are to a formal meeting. I recommend a suit in a more traditional color (it doesn’t have to be black or boring, though), like the combination below.
I would also suggest conservative heels, and if you’re going to wear a dress or skirt, make sure it’s not too short when you sit down.
Finally, be mindful of the season. If you wear a light, linen suit with bare legs in the winter, some might notice that you seem out of place among the scarves and heavy coats.
Dressing powerfully will help you remember that you’re the legal authority at the meeting.
